Corby Foodbank has seen a fall in user numbers thanks to the continuation of our financial inclusion project in collaboration with Citizens Advice.
New data reveals that the number of clients has fallen for a second consecutive year by approximately 10% from a peak of 3,500 in 2023, following the launch of the project in 2022.
As part of the project, a dedicated Citizens Advice advisor is located in the foodbank to help users tackle the issues that may lead to them needing to use the foodbank service. This includes finding ways to reduce outgoings or maximising household income through advice and knowledge-based signposting.
“The positive impact of introducing the Citizens Advice service here at Corby Foodbank is clear to see,” says Martin Langford, manager at Corby Foodbank.
“The drop in numbers proves that providing advice alongside food is the key to ending the need for foodbanks. However, although this service was fully funded by Trussell for the first three years, funding has reduced to 50% in this, our fourth year. This is set to end entirely in July.
“Therefore, in order to avoid this vital service coming to an end, we need new funding partners to come forward.”
While there is positivity in the fall in numbers of those using Corby Foodbank thanks to its Citizens Advice service, financial inclusion project and wider community support, donation levels have also dipped dramatically.
Figures for 2023-2025 emphasises the changing pattern of community support, with donation levels down overall by almost 30%.
“Despite the generosity of the community, the foodbank has also seen a marked fall in donations. This means that we are increasingly having to find additional funds to make up the shortfall in the essential food items needed to support those who rely on the service we provide,” continues Martin.
“The drop in donations is primarily attributed to the cost of living crisis which has seen people having to tighten their belts when it comes to donations. However, the drop in goods received doesn’t in any way take away the appreciation we have for all the incredible donations that have been made.
“Every donation is very much appreciated and plays a vital part in enabling us to support the community, so please do continue to bear us in mind.”
